Geometry & Topology Seminar: "Mechanics on fibered manifolds"

Abstract: Let Q be a fibered manifold over M, and let VQ be the vertical bundle. We introduce the Hamilton-Pontryagin principle on VQ+V*Q, which simultaneously yields the Euler-Lagrangian equations, the Legendre transform and the second order path condition; and the reduction of H-P principle by a groupoid action. This is a generalization of the work by Yoshimura-Marsden on the Hamilton-Pontryagin principle on TQ+T*Q and its reduction.  This is joint work with Ari Stern and Xiang Tang.
