Dissertation Defense: "Three Problems in Operator Theory and Complex Analysis"

Cheng Chu

Abstract: I will talk about three distinct problems in function theory on the unit circle that are more or less related to Toeplitz operators on Hardy spaces.  The first problem answers the question: when is the product of a Toeplitz operator and a Hankel operator compact?  In the second problem, a new estimate of the spectral area of certain Toeplitz operators is given. The third one solves a nonlinear extremal problem, and its solution relies on the relation between symmetric Toeplitz matrices and analytic functions.
