Colloquium: "From [Q,R]=0 to Representation Theory"

Yanli Song, Dartmouth College

Abstract: The quantization commutes with reduction phenomenon ([Q,R]=0) was first explored by Guillemin and Sternberg within the context of Kahler geometry. A great deal has been written on the topic since then, often with the goal of broadening the context to symplectic geometry or beyond.  In this talk I shall explain the [Q,R]=0 problem and outline some of the close links to representation theory. In particular, I will discuss a geometric solution to a classical branching problem of determining the restriction to a maximal compact subgroup K of a standard representation of G. This is a joint work with Hochs and Yu.
