Analysis Seminar: "On a bi-parameter maximal operator related to multilinear ergodic averages"

Peter Luthy, College of Mount Saint Vincent

Abstract: If T is a measure-preserving transformation from a finite measure space to itself, Birkhoff's Ergodic Theorem is a classical result on the convergence properties of the average value of a function over the orbit x, T(x), T^2(x), ..., T^n(x) as n tends to infinity.  In this talk, we will discuss certain similar multilinear ergodic averages to motivate the study of a related multilinear maximal operator.  We will sketch the construction of an associated discretized time-frequency model operator and discuss how the proof of its boundedness connects to papers by Demeter-Tao-Thiele and Muscalu-Tao-Thiele.
