Colloquium: "Crazy Surfaces and Mathematical Outreach in Native American Populations"

Dave Auckly, Kansas State University

Abstract: In this 2-part colloquium, we will describe a pair of smooth surfaces in a four dimensional space that have the following properties. One may be continuously deformed into the other. It is impossible to smoothly deform one into the other. If a ``hole" is drilled in the space outside of the surfaces, then it will be possible to deform one into the other.

We will also discuss the Navajo Nation Math Circles outreach program and new programs aiming to bring math to indigenous populations.
